WEATHER CLIMATE AND SEASON
Weather may be defined as state or condition of atmosphere at a given place and at a given time. It is state or variation of troposphere i.e., lower layer of atmosphere.
Troposphere lies beyond the height of 8-18 km from the earth and is densest part of atmosphere where all weather phenomena e.g., rain, cloud, dew etc. occurs.
Weather is related to smaller area like village city or town and smaller duration of time i.e., day or part of a day and is always denoted by numerical value of meteorological parameters.
Climate is conditions of weather related to larger place or over a given region and longer duration of time.
It may be defined as summation of weather state pertaining to larger place; say zone, state, country, continent and longer period of time like month, year, season.
Examples– Hot season, Cold season, Temperate climate, Tropical climate etc. It is expressed in averages
What is season?
A season is a period of the year that is distinguished by special climate conditions. One of the most important factors that determines the season is the maximum intensity of the sun’s rays over a given area. This changes as the earth revolves around the sun, tilted on its axis. Therefore, seasonal changes are due to the earth revolving around the sun.
Due to the regular occurrence of monsoon period and subsequent period with considerable variation in temperature, the year is divided into four periods from crop production point of view.
- Cold weather period or winter- From January to February.
- Hot weather period or summer or pre-monsoon period– From March to May.
- South-west monsoon or Rainy or Monsoon period- June to September.
- North-east monsoon or post-rainy or post-monsoon period– From October to December.
